Did anyone else get the Tweet about the Turn For Troops event at Woodcraft on November 6th? Anybody going? I'm so interested that I'm considering canceling a trip to Disney World with the family so I can be there. My question is am I going to be in over my head? I've only turned a few pens and I'm not exactly a master.

The woodcraft in my area has it open to the public. No experience required. The New England Chapter has members volunteering to assist new turners. Go for it.

I wouldn't cancel a family trip, wait, I hate Disney World, so I would go to Woodcraft. I can't stand seeing all that cash flowing out of my wallet at Disney. Those turning days are fun, but there is not a lot of production going on. There is a lot of talkin and gawkin going on. Before our store closed, I would go in and pic up a bunch of kits a couple of weeks before the event. That way I could help the count and have 30 or more ready. You might call your store and see what they prefer.

Go for it. I work at the Jacksonville Woodcraft. It's geared for anyone to be able to turn a pen - experienced or not. Pretty much all locations have people available to help rookies be successful. FYI to anyone interested, we're doing Turn for the Troops on Nov 11 (Veteran's Day) and on Nov 13 (the following Sat). Hopefully anyone in the area can make it!

Yep, I went to one last year after only having been turning a month or so. I learned a lot, was given a lot of encouragement, and was treated to the fantastic and helpful nature of turners. Normally I would say not to cancel a Disney trip for it, but considering you live in Orlando, that's probably the same as me wondering if I should hit the Turn for Troops or go grocery shopping....

So unless the kids are going to not speak to you over the mouse thing, I'd say go for it. You're sure to learn something, and likely meet a great bunch of fellow turners.
