I tried it once, didn't like it. With the availability of spare tubes already cut to length, I just keep some extra on hand for the kits I routinely make. When I did cut them, I used my chop saw, I know not the best way to do it, but it got the job done. Also with buying them already cut, you don't have to worry about getting the lenght just right. I do know that PSI sells tubes in certain diameters that you can cut yourself.
 
I cut my own tubes when I make up pens. I sometimes buy the precut pieces and I keep the 10 inch tubes available at some of the vendors on hand and I use K&S engineering tubes as well I use the mini chop saw sold by Harbor freight to rough cut the length and then turn it to final size on the lathe. I should tell you I rarely make a kit pen.

i was thinking about getting long stock but at psi they have pre cut tubes that are the right length for pretty much every pen kit they have
