Any idea what this species is? The closest I can guess is stained white oak.

FWIW, my Lens app says it is Oak. I would assume it has been stained as White oak is mostly white and Red Oak is a reddish color.

Oak but can't tell red or white with the stain.

You can blow thru red oak like a straw but not thru white oak.

Haven't heard of the Lens app yet. Better get it and see how well it works. I've seen suggested either ash or oak, and probably red oak due to the open pores. Rift sawn probably?

It is probably a stain, but it looks a lot like some toasted oak pen blanks that I have. Toasted oak is oak that has undergone a controlled heating process to break it down which unlocks a lot of aromatics. Lignin breaks down into vanillin which provides a distinct vanilla scent. Hemicellulose breaks down into sugars and then caramelizes to produce a toffee like color. The tannins are softened and lose their harsh stringency.
Although most toasted oak is used to provide flavors and colors for aging whisky, bourbon, and scotch, mine came from oak spacers used between electronic components that were being cured in an industrial oven over a long period of time.

The "Lens" app is an Android phone app found in the Google playstore. I believe Apple has a built in version.
Using your phone camera, the app will recognize what it is you want to identify be it weed, flower, plant or just about anything and then give you a description of the app sees is in the photo and then provide some links for further information.
I use it all the time for plant ID.
