As for what it is, it's a synthetic product that originally contained a high level of powdered mineral. Some I'm sure still does, some of the new stuff, seems less so. It's really more a brand than an actual single product. The properties are all over the chart as far as brittleness, abrasiveness, tendency to chip, overheat, or otherwise ruin your day. Some very cool patterns though. I'm not really sure what it was originally formulated for, I've never really seen it used for anything other than jewelery, pens, or other small decorative type stuff. I suspect that's the market it was originally designed for, thus it's high price, unlike corian or other industrial/consumer products that are adapted for artistic/craft type uses, which are made and priced to be used in larger quantities.
