Would there be interest by the membership if there are some demonstratoins that are dedicated to different techniques for tool usage.
I.E a demo on just the skew
a demo on various ways to use the roughing gouge
a demo on various ways to use spindle gouges
a demo on various scraping techniques?

Included at the same time might be different grinds and sharpening techniques for the individual tool for that meeting

I'd say yes.
It's one thing to read about using the tools.. and to see photos, diagrams etc.
It's another to watch someone do it up to speed with each tool. It puts things
in better context.
When I first started, it took my about 45 minutes to round out a piece of walnut
to make a bowl. Then I saw Richard Raffan do it in about 10 seconds. After that,
it took me about 2 minutes. (I'm no Raffan..) But watching someone do it in real
time is much different than seeing it explained. The explanation can take 10 times
as long as the real thing. Watching it being done just made it all click.

anyone want to buy some oval and corkscrew shaped bowls?

Neil,
From the second post to this thread, I think we have a volunteer for the roughing gouge demo.
Of course, after looking at the finish of thework presented by this individual, that must be the correct tool for him:eek::eek::biggrin:

I think its a good idea.
I didnt even use my skew until I seen Neil turn the circuit board pen blank. Just seeing the angles of attack he used I went out and bought a sorby that next week and use it alot more now. When I actually get to turn.

i think its a good idea, if its a demo members are paying for i can arrange to have it after hours when the store is cosed, i also think we have good turners in the group already that can do the demo

Do we want to do this one tool a meeting in conjunction with other demos or just have a tool use meeting?

We should be able to have one tool at a time well withing our normal meeting and we have the talent to do it ourselves

Seems like it should be easy enough to do three or four tools in a
simple demo. (the simpler, the better) It is easy to get bogged down in
the details and that can overwhelm some people. (I'm one of them) but
if it is planned out well, 10 minutes on a tool should be enough to give
people a good feel. At least I think so..
