I've spent the last six weeks restoring a 1947 South Bend 9" Model A lathe. Thanks to a lot of You Tube videos, a great step-by-step instruction book and rebuild kit from Ilion Industries and a patient wife, I took it down completely, replaced felts and bearings, painted and reassembled and only had one machine screw left over (uh-oh!).

Now, back to pens...

Doug

Hi Doug,

Wanted you to know how much I appreciated your restoration especially the bearings must have been a bear.

I have a 1966 Hercus the Hercus factory commenced before WW2 using the South Bend designs etc as a combined War effort American- Australia cooperation.

Wanted to show by some old pics of mine the various tool posts I use and a Dremel Attachment I made to fit where the tool post goes to cut grooves for circlips, cutting shaping etc.

Kind regards Peter.

Now that is a tool. Stuff made back then is oh so much better than what you can buy today. I have a Buffalo drill press that is an absolute beast. About the same vintage.

Back again Doug,

If you send me a pm again thanks with your email addy I can send pics dont know how on a pm.

I looked for another pic of my lathe lightened it up to show more clearly the lhs drive is called o/head the cream 3 phase motor drives to the outside of an ohead shaft which then transfers to the head stock to give three speed choices via a 3 step pulley. In the next couple of days I will look for a pdf manual and parts guide info I have somewhere. I have a number of attachments including an angle boring one and others all original with also imperial collets and a few chucks Burnard brand of various sizes. Also overhead is a gray fluro two foot light.

We are coming into summer with 30 degrees C today next week below zero for a few mornings a typical spring. Dont envy your snow the nearest is the hills and mountains in sight from us about 1 1/2 hrs drive we get the cold winds from there.

Note the hole in the wall lhs to allow the collet locking spindle to be used.

Kind regards Peter
