Used them 35 years ago around Brampton , prior to front wheel drive and 4 wheel drive . Very good on ice , not so good for the pavement . Didn`t find the noise excessive . Wasn`t aware they were still legal .

Has anyone tried studs in winter tires? How were they? Loud? Worth the cost? Any downsides, grip wise?

I've used both metal and then non-metal studs(when metal were made illegal).
I've had them on a rear wheel drive Chev mini van-on all 4 tires. While of course the fronts didn't drive, the studs helped in steering.

No sideways grip problem. Just the opposite, they gripped great, as noted, even the non driving fronts.

I've used on front wheel and 4 wheel drives. Wouldn't be without them. Yes, they all a little noisy, but not considerably. Way not like chains.

Hope this helps a little

I have used them both here in Washington and in Alaska over the years and they do help on icy roads other than that they are worthless. Unless you have a lot of ice to drive on I would say save your money.

It's for my wife, and I worry about her long drive to work - it's not icy often, but when it is, I'll be a little less apprehensive...

So if they don't reduce traction considerably on non-ice, and they're not that loud (thanks for that input!) - I think I'll go with studs - since they're hte same price, nearly. Gislaved Nordfrost 100

I lived in northern BC for 40 years and used them all the time. I would say 40% of the people used them. A great asset at icy intersections ..

Update = have no idea how we ever did without them. The studded Nordfrosts are the best tire I've ever used in my life, in these winter conditions. We don't see bare pavement until around April, so they're wonderful. It's like driving in the summer - quite fun to be out in ridiculous weather, with the roads looking like a mirror and/or a hard-packed snow chute, and not having to worry!

Liked them so much I bought a set of Nokian Hakkapellitta LT2 studded tires for the truck (Gislaved didn't make them in truck sizes) - they're less impressive, but still not bad. In 4WD, they're unstoppable.

Yep - I've been using them for years. I've bought loved ones sets for their cars, too! (Makes for a personal yet practical X-mas present!) I'll never NOT use 'em!

Haven't heard tire noise since early October - once it snows, the studs are muffled by the snow.

The hakkapellittas have some 'shock' built in to the studs too - supposed to make them last longer, and they do have less of an audible 'click' than the big, round studs...

I used them

Until the mid 70s when it stopped dumping much snow and very little ice where I lived we used them and they worked well. We only used them on the rear tires but used them on both the car and my truck.

I remember when i was around 13 years old, my dad had me putting tire studs in for customers. One Saturday i did over 200 tires. Seems like yesterday, but that was 25 years ago. Every Saturday in the winter, i became the tire stud kid. Ended up doing over 700 of them.
