Well, coming from a Pith box the blanks could have come from many places including OZ, I may be totally wrong but that blank resembles some of the #24 Cork tree wood I have that also shows some "rings" of spalting/black lines here and there.

Cheers

When I first looked at the blank I thought that it was spalted walnut as it had the same colouring, but after turning it it is a good bit darker.

I checked the pictures of your #24 Cork wood which has different colouring from my blank.
I should have taken a photograph before turning, but I was sure that it was walnut.
I will look to see if I have an off-cut to photograph.
Thanks anyway.

George, here's a photograph of the offcut if that helps. Alan

Walnut has a distinct smell to it. Not an unpleasant just a pleasant smell.

Yes soft wood, very easily turned, and it was sent in a box from America with other blanks which could have come from anywhere.
