Just finished turning and assembled this Manhattan pen. The wood, has many common names; Goncalo Alves, Tigerwood, Jobillo.
The sanding lubricant was walnut oil, and then applied 5 coats of Pen Plus. Top coat of wax was then applied.
Wood was a little darker than I anticipated but thought it turned out well.

Sure does look really nice! You wet sand with walnut oil?

Yes, starting at 1000 - 12000 grit is where I start wet sanding with walnut oil as my lubricant. I do a dry sand to 600 then use denatured alcohol to clean the blank(s) then start the wet sanding.

Beaut pen, Tom ... I am going to try your finishing technique ... how long do you wait between consecutive applications of Pens Plus ?

... a few minutes ? ... several hours ? ... or ?

I put 5 coats and wait 3 minutes between coats. The recommended is anytime after 45 seconds. Then I top it off with a wax that I buffed in. Hope this helps.
