This came from a blank that had lots of cracks through it and wasn't good enough to sell, however most of them turned out and i was left with a nice pen

I notice that you said "most" cracks were turned out. Did you fill any remaining cracks?

Fred, there was one small one left and it filled in when i was doing the CA method and now you can hardly see it
