After supper tonight my spouse went to run the garbage disposal and ...
nada, nothing.

For all of the electricians who might say I should have called a professional --- On Saturday night?

The reset button was not tripped, the motor shaft would turn and the circuit breaker was not tripped. So I got my "free gift" (from an order to harbor freight a while back) multimeter out, took the plate off the wall switch, pulled the switch out and checked - 120V across the switch in both on and off positions. Quick trip to Walmart, new switch installed and back in business. Less than an hour including the trip to Walmart.

Cheap switch but no cheaper than the one it replaced and that one lasted 7 years so this one has a good chance of outlasting me. I would have used a better one if it had broke on a Weekday before 8pm (when ACE Hardware closes)

OMG!! You tested a live 120v wire?! And you're still alive?!

LOL...

The last time that I switched something out, it was a GFI outlet in a bathroom that didn't cut out the power when it was tripped. So I took it out, carefully made sure that I noted which wire was marked as the mains, and which was going to a downstream outlet.

Wired up the new one and NOTHING worked. Took it out, unwired it, pulled out the handy multimeter and found out the reason the GFI blew up on the last one was they had it backwards. Put it in right and all done.

Like the easy ones. The basics of electricity are simple. Once someone asked a question and provided a picture and if I could be there in person it would have been an easy fix. However there was an extra wire in the picture and to explain over a distance what to check made the issue, pardon the pun, too hot to handle. Another time a question was asked and a lot more info was needed and specific things needed to be checked and the project really needed an electrician on site to deal with the issue. The important thing is to know your limits and stop when you get there.

Smitty testing for juice is easy just touch the black to your tongue with your left hand, and hold firmly on to the white one with the right. At least thats the way some folks here in 10uhsee do it <LOL>

As a early teenager some of my friends would stick their finger in a light socket to test for "juice". I go zapped once changing a light bulb in a pull chain fixture. The hot side was wired to the outside and the neutral went to the center post....I innocently touched the socket while screwing in the bulb.

Smitty, just think of how much money you saved! Call out fee, evening/ weekend fee, overtime rate etc .... Well done you!
