Is there any reason that something like this would not work?

I would epoxy them in. I'm looking for an alternative to the brass screw-in inserts for wood. The wood ones are not designed to screw into end grain so the threads are very large and it's difficult to install them all the way unless I drill and oversized hole.

Don't see why not. .

You can also glue in the brass ones designed for bottle stopper work. .
Slightly oversize hole won't matter if you glue them

I would not recommend them. The description states they are designed to expand as the screw is installed that will comprises the epoxy if it is cured. I use the insert that comes in the kit with a liberal amount of thick CA or 5 minute epoxy.
