you could use that to make pens but not sure sand paper would cut that fast

Don't think I would use it to do pens myself. I think this shows the ingenuity that people have when they want to do something bad enough, they will find away. Although I agree, you could do it to make pens, I would use soft woods and really sharp tools. :)
 
I seem to remember we had a new member a few years ago who turned his first pen using a drill press.

Been a few. My first "lathe' was my drill press. I turned it on its side, attached a bearing to the table for the end of the mandrel to run in, and used a piece of angle iron for the tool rest. First tool was a file with the end ground skew-like! Hey, it worked.
