Built my first Aero click, installed a new schmidt refill and it wouldn't retract the refill correctly so I tried the original daycom refill and same problem. I ordered several kits so I had the other tubes and components to compare it to thought maybe I cut the tube way too short somehow, but nope. Finally found the little plastic piece you see in the pics below. I have no idea where it came from or how it got up into the pen. Luckily I was able to bang and shake it out and it works great now lol. Anyone ever seen this little devil that caused me such a headache?

Looks like it COULD be ....... the black plastic cap that they put on the end of the Parker-style refills.

Check to see if your refill has such a cap on the end. . Also check the Dayacom refill to see if it has one.

All refills of that type usually have such a cap.

Never seen one but I think this is the 12th pen I've ever made. Do they have a purpose or just something left on from manufacture process maybe? If it came off a refill I can't get to go back onto one of them. I mainly use the Schmidt refills and just checked all the ones I have and none of them have one. Also checked the other 3 Aero kits I bought but haven't made yet and none of the Daycom refills have one on them either. No idea lol. I'll keep an eye out in the future because it was driving me nuts till I figured it out.

OK, so maybe "they" don't put such caps on all "Parker-like" (loose term) refills ... I might be thinking of the Gel refills, which without a cap of that type would have an open top end. . The open top end can invite the penetration of click-pen push button shaft if it is narrow enough.
I recall that happening.

Anyway, it was just a possibility. . You seem to have a nicely working pen now and that's all that really matters.

Take a look at the picture of the refill at the bottom of this set of instructions. . I believe it is a Schmidt Roller Ball refill.

To my eye, I can imagine that the "plug" at the top end of the refill, after removal from the refill, would look much like the little plastic piece that you found inside your pen ... and when removed allowed your pen to function properly.

MYSTERY SOLVED. It's the cap from the end of a Pilot G2 pen refill. I left the pen with my wife to look at after I made it but I hadn't put any ink in it yet. She told me she tried to put her refill from her G2 and sure enough I checked it and that's where it came from lol.

I was going to suggest a Pilot G2, but I couldn't think of the "Pilot" part. . At least I had the "principle" right ... ie. a cap from a refill.
