Small lathes are a pain at times! But, I am trying a "do-nut" chuck that I heard about; to face off the bottom of a Cherry bowl... I turned the bowl on a small Jet and am using my ShopSmith (that I got over a year ago) for the 1st time because it's variable speed adjustment! I am turning the 16" "chuck" at 350 RPM...maybe I should have just used a sander..:doctor:

I suggest turning the bolts around so that they extend toward the headstock and not toward your left hand as you are turning the bottom of the bowl.

I made one of those and used it many times before I purchased a vacuum chuck, and a few times since. Go slow and definitely turn the bolts around.

Go slow and you will be ok. Just remember you have a pretty big flywheel that produces a lot of inertia. When you remove the tailstock slow the lathe before hitting the stop button or the piece unwind itself. DAMHIKT

Along with the turn the bolt around id counter sink them also so nothing is sticking out at all. but pretty cool idea and i hope it works

Please make sure the wood edges are well rounded over and have no splinters. Painting the edges of the wood red or yellow is a good reminder visually.

There are some things that just cannot be mounted any other way including things with holes in them.
