The most important thing my Dad taught me was to NEVER let ANYONE tell me I couldn't do something just because I was a girl! He bought me my first car (a Nash Metropolitan) with the engine where the back seat belonged. We spent the summer before I turned 16 rebuilding the engine. (It has been a boon in more than one auto shop through the years. It doesn't take a shop foreman very long to learn that he can't BS me when it comes to car repairs.)
He bought me my first rifle when I was 8 and taught me to shoot safely. My grandmother taught me to sew on an old treadle sewing machine, and my grandfather taught me to use power tools and to love to work with wood. I learned to be responsible by having pets and horses that were dependent on me for their care.
The most cherished moment as a parent came when my young son and I were backing out of the driveway and the hellions next door were shouting obscenities at us. He asked me why they acted like that. I said it wasn't their fault. Their parents had never paddled their butts and taught them not to act that way. We drove on for several blocks, and he touched my knee and said "Thanks mom." I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
