i was going to post this last night but i didn't have the pictures and i know how some of you get.

several years ago my dad gave me this saw. don't know where he got it, probably a garage sale or something, any ways., i didn't really have any use for it, it was far too small for anything i was doing so it just sat in my shop. i gave it back to him and he passed it along.

years later i saw a story on cutting veneer and they were using a saw like this and thought it would be great, then i started making pens and thought how great it would be for cutting blanks and doing segments, and celtic knots but alas the saw was gone.

well last weekend my brother phoned me, he was cleaning out his shop and it turns out thats where the saw ended up and he didn't want it there. so it has returned to my shop.

it needs a little cleaning and a new blade but i think it will work great. the 3rd picture shows its size in relation to my table saw.

looks just like the saw my grandad used to build his house... someone nicked the motor off it though while it was sitting in my dads driveway.. bummer... honking motor on it!

it should be a pretty fun little saw :cool:

Definitely not a Dremel both the 580 and 580-2 used a small sewing machine type motors and were mounted below the table, not outboard. I would imagine this could potentially be much more solid and thus better than then dremel. It appears to be cast which the dremel definitely was not... I personally have an older dremel and would love to trade up for a Byrnes any day, the dremel is just too flimsy and requires too many adjustments to keep it all square. Hope it all works out for you!
 
its definitely all cast and incredibly heavy, i just noticed from the pic that there is a logo on the side. i will check it out the next time i am out in the shop. i'm also thinking of reversing the motor so that i can put it in front of the saw to take up less space and i think i'm going to try one of those link belts
 
It's so cute sitting there:tongue:...just needs some cleaning(maybe sandblasting) and a fresh coat of paint(like its big brother that it's sitting on)....and a shiney new blade!

here is a quick update on my saw project. i sanded the top and put on a coat of wax, replaced the blade and in the process of making a sled.

Looks a lot better. Be careful of the belt on the side. I might make a cover for it to keep anything from falling into it or your hand from getting caught if you are pushing something through to cut. Just a thought.
