I took my son to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico this summer. If you don't know, Philmont is a "high-adventure" camp—stunningly beautiful…lots of hiking—basically an experience no one forgets. Anyway, when I go places, I pick up pieces of wood and turn them into pens. I made these two particular pens for the two other dads with me on the trek to help herd the nine boys with us. One pen was made from Cholla cactus and the other from Aspen (both from the hike and both were on the ground). Both dads were pretty jazzed about receiving them.

Really nice pens! I went to Philmont twice as a kid, about 45 years ago. Best time of my life. I'd kill for one of those pens :)

I still have some of the Cholla cactus from the trip left...if you promise not to ever let anyone borrow it (that way you won't lose it), send my your address and I'll see what I can do.

That's fantastic and a great idea!

I was just at Seabase in late June and hope to hit Philmont next year.
