She just arrived. Nothing like that new blown plastic smell mixed with oil dripping off everything to make your day. I bought these for a specific non-pen job but will be bringing it over to the dark side when that is done. Off to clean the oil off now....

that is near to being the best investment i have made so far. use mine daily. i have been doing my turning with the collet. i place the bushings on the mandrel, no adaptor, put in my 1/4 collet and shorten to just enough for blank. use live center. works as well as TBC IMHO. love my collet. am working a little at a time on obtaining all the sizes.

I went to Amazon to order a set of collets for $60.00 but they are back up to $73.47

I wonder how offen they discount them to $60 ???

Make sure that you are signed in, and add them to your cart but don't buy. A week or two later do the same thing. That seems to trigger Amazons tracking stuff to send an email sometimes and will often come with a discount to try and entice you to bite the bullet! :)

Charlie, could you explain more about how this is done? What is TBC IMHO?

TBC - Turn Between Centers
IMHO - In My Honest Opinion

He is pretty much using a 1/4" pin as a Mandrel. Much more rigid than a longer 1/4" Pen Mandrel and likely better steel. To me it sounds similar to using an adjustable mandrel or a Mandrel Saver and turning only one part at a time. I mainly switched to TBC becasue I got tired of having to losen my Tailstock to remove the part to measure w/ my Cali's, I think I'm just lazy though:smile:.

TBC-turb between centers, IMHO-in my humble opinion. i put the mandrel in a 1/4" collet. i put the budhings and blank on the mandrel with a nut as you would. the diference is that i do not use spacer bushings. i use 1 short spacer to get the blank away from the collet chuck. then i slide the mandrel all the way back in the collet and tighten. that way i only have a minimal amount of length. i use my live center as you would with the mandrel in regular fashion. very sturdy. runs within .003" all the time. l have about 50 sets of bushings so very expensive to buy TBC bushings. i still use digital calipers for size.

Nice. Got one a few months ago and got some size D drill rod and a mandrel saver. This has eliminated almost all of my out of round issues. Can't wait to start using my on bullet pens.
