This was emailed to LOML by a good friend of ours. We have no idea who the author is, but whoever it was, they are spot-on. Today, a parent could be seeing jail-time for this kind of drug problem.

I never had soap in my mouth except by accident, and we didn't have a wood shed, so it was just where ever we were standing when the time came... my mother would make me go to the peach tree and cut my own switch... if she didn't like it, I had to go back and cut another.... my dad was a tall man and his practice was to catch me by the upper arm and lift me clear of the floor... then with his belt doubled I would get two or three straps across the calves of my legs... the belt would pop when it hit and made a lot of noise.. I think the fear was worse than the actual strapping... I remember each and every one and can count them on one hand...I didn't want any more than that.
It was required to say "yes sir", "yes Ma'am", "no sir and "no ma'am". We took off our hats when we came in, we did not sit at the table with a hat on, we opened and held doors for ladies, we called any adult Mr. or Mrs. or Miss.
I have a few of those drugs in my system too.

My dad only had to drag me to the wood shed a couple of times---any more than that and you would of had a limp. He was a man of few words but in the back of your mind you remembered the last time you where drug to the wood shed.

I was only spanked twice as a kid, once by my dad and anothe by my grandpa. I don't remember what I did but I still remember the fear of it.

On the holding doors for ladies line in the first post: I was always raised to hold the door for women wherever I go. What really irritates me though is if I am at Target or the mall or something and I wait to hold the door for a woman and she looks at me with fear in her eyes and goes and opens the door next to me herself!!! Its no wonder more guys don't hold doors for women. There is too much stigma out there about men. More often than not they will not go through the door that I hold open for them, yet I still do it. I just look at them and smile and say "your welcome".

At the jail I work at we recently started a "social ediquette" class for the inmates to teach them some manners. Very few even know how to say please and thank you. Why haven't their parents taught them this at a young age and I wouldn't have to do it when they are 30!

Gwisher, if they had done it at a young age they wouldn't be inmates! I teach high school, and the amount of careless attitudes toward other human beings today disgusts me!

Oh----that brings up another good one------Mrs Ward dragged me out into the hall and I got a wack across the back side. Funny she is one of the few teachers I remembered or even like.
Wonder what the would do if a teacher drug a kid out into the hall today???????

Gwisher, McBryde,

Your posts reminded me of a 60s file, Sidney Poitier in "To Sir, with Love".

Gary,

I had a few hallway sessions myself, and you know I remember those teachers also in a good way. They always explained why I was going to get the swat, and it was never given in anger.

I still remeber the hardest part was standing out in the hall waiting for the wack. Seemed like a life time.
