Just found my dads 1940 tenth edition Bluejackets manual from when he was in the Navy. I bet there are a few on this site that might know about this book.

Salt in a slowly healing wound for me. I lost ALL my gear I came home with when my brothers home was foreclosed. Sea bag, blue-jacket manual, BM3 manual, bos'ns whistle, ships plaque and, lots of pictures from two Med cruises, Carribean cruise, SHELLBACK certificate for crossing the equator. All of it. My brother went with me to get the stuff out of his garage where six BIG guys were already loading the stuff. Told me it was now the banks property. At the time, I didn't think I'd ever have a need for the stuff. This was just a couple of years after my discharge. Should have put up a fight.

But, yeah the Blue-jackets manual was a pretty thorough manual.

1951 Edition

I was in boot camp at Bainbridge, MD at this time 56 years ago so I had issued the 1951 edition of the Blue Jackets Manual. That was the holy book of basic training. The main things I remember about boot camp is that our company commander was a nasty son of a gun. He made us run everywhere (he walked) - he insisted that we be the 1st or 2nd company in line for breakfast so we would have more time for cleaning in the morning and if he ever said a kind word to a recruit before our graduatiion, I didn't hear it. But, we were a good company and we had a lot of flags to show for it and when I finished boot camp I was probably in the best physical shape of my life.

I'm a little greener than Smitty... I didn't get my BJM until 1960, but I still have it on the bookshelf in my library. When I get his age, I'll still have it... unless the house blows away. Hang on to it... it may be valuable some day or a priceless keepsake.

What months? I was there April-June '98. Division 215. Wow... that seems ages ago now.

Bootcamp in San Diego 1959 and got a lot of answers out of that manual for the Seaman exam when aboard the Oriskany CVA 34.
