quick question if you don't mind?
how does it hold the mandel in tension? with a MT in the tailstock wouldn't any tension towards the headstock just pull the MT out of the tailstock? I must be missing something, i see a brass nut in the photo but what does that pull/push against?

I went back and read it a second time. The greatest advantages that I see is that it is machined to much higher tolerances than is available on commercially purchased mandrels.

The brass nut tightens from head stock end just enough to hold the blanks in place. I don't see how pressure from the nut on one end or the other changes anything in that respect but again, the fine machining will make the greatest difference.
