I had a request to make pens and shave sets out of two raw pieces of maple burl and mesquite burl from a colleague. Sounded simple enough, but it was challenging. Raw burl has very irregular surfaces and the band saw helped get me started establishing a single flat side. Finding undamaged pieces large enough was also a challenge and not cutting off any fingers went along with that. I managed and still have all fingers... Raw wood has a nasty tendency to shoot out a stray piece at the wrong time it seems.

My thanks goes to all of those who have posted fixes for unstabilized wood like coating it with thin CA to stabilize it. I did this several times and managed to get it to shape. Thanks also to those who suggested sanding the blank and leaving the dust in the defects and applying CA to fill them. Both of these suggestions made the impossible a reality.
