I've only been turning since mid-October. Until last night I have avoided making pens that require a precisely sized tenon. Guess I was intimidated...

After making two Americana pens last night I really don't know why!

Don't know why I felt the need to post that, but there it is.

I guess I was just really surprised at how stupid easy it was!

Always thought those pens were easy to make... 'course, when I first got my lathe and a collections of pen kits for Christmas, the only kits I got were the Euro style pens with the tenon for the center band... they were the pens I learned on and thought that was the norm, until I bought a cigar and slimline and discovered I had started the hard way... the Euro and the Americana are still two of my favorite pens to make... when I make pens... haven't in nearly a year since I would rather do pepper mills and bowls.

I had the same fear. On the first one I spent ages measuring and re measuring to make sure I go the tenon exactly the length specified in the instructions. Then, when I put the pen togehter I realized the lenght of the tenon is quite THAT critical. Plain sailing from then on!

I made my first tenon pen (a Euro) before I found out tenons are supposed to be hard. Easy-peasy, never had a problem, love those Euros. IMO, cutting a tenon with a parting tool is easier than shaping the rest of the blank with a skew or gouge.
