I have a project that needs help. I have a metal rod in my ankle and a completely replaced left knee. At a recent show, I did too much lifting and can barely walk until it heals. Now I am not complaining but what I want to do is ask your help in the form of ideas. No pity, no money, no judgment. One area of real concern was the recent show to which my wife was invited. She had to load herself because I was home convalescing and she was left walking in an area that a day later produced an assault and rape. I as a husband cannot subject my wife to dangerous situations like this and should have known better. The show (Bayou Art Festival) should have had shuttle service from the show site to their designated (Lot H) parking area.
I know that there are engineers out there or people with natural talent for fulcrum designs. The tent and the tail gate to the trailer are the two culprits and weigh, as you might guess, between 75 to 100 lbs. I am strapping the tent to a 4 wheeled aluminum dolly, so that issue is solved. The tail gate is heavy because we drive a golf cart on it to load the vehicle and is used for shows where distance becomes an issue. I have two ideas that need developing and your help.
#1 a boat winch with a 4' (the tail gate is 4' long) bar at a 45 degree angle to the tail gate. A cable running from the tip of the tail gate, over the bar and down to the winch, which is fastened to the frame.
#2 a fulcrum device of some sort that uses my 300 lbs. to offset and lift the gate. (Oh and by the way, before you judge my weight, I have recently lost thirty - five pounds and continue to loose)
Lifting, putting pressure on the metal equipment located inside me is the devil we are trying to defeat. Stepping on and pushing and pulling and cranking are the good options.
I would enjoy any ideas that me, as a weekend warrior, can put together with garage tools. I do have a welder close by that charges $10.00 every time I say hello, but is a source for welding.
Thanking you in advance,
John

John,
one of my trailers has a pair units with springs inside of square steel tubing with a short length of cable attached. The cable runs from the end of the spring to about halfway down the (quite heavy) ramp at each side. The bulk of the ramp weight is lifted by the springs with probably only 15 or 20 pounds of force necessary for me to lift the ramp. It's a commercially available add on. I've seen similiar rigs on many landscape company trailers. I don't know the name of the manufacturer off hand but can get it for you if you want. It's a real simple and effective design that works great.

Phil:

Yes, I need the address. It briefly crossed my mind to use springs but could not fathom how to attach them. That would be a very good idea.

If you would get the manufacturers name off the trailer I could do the rest and possibly find them on the "web" or inter net.

Thank you again.
