I wanted to share the excitement of a recent event. I have been asked by the Resident Artist at the John C. Campbell folk school to come up and teach 2 pen turning classes in 2011. They will be weekend turning classes, and they will both be geared towards beginners or folks who feel like they need a refresher on basic pen turning.

I have to thank quite a few folks for getting me ready to take on this fabulous opportunity, and there are a few here who know who you are. I appreciate the open and free exchange of ideas and knowledge that this site represents, and cannot wait to instill the wonder and pleasure of pen turning in some new turners!

Thanks to everyone in the IAP family who has contributed to my skills (I cannot wait to check my inbox...LOL....).

Congrats, that sounds like a wonderful opportunity. Your excitement and passion are your best tools for success. Some of the best teachers I ever had are those who brought the subject with the enthusiasm that you seem to posses. Best wishes and let us know how it goes.

Wow, and to think I knew you when...

So, what are you teaching - slimlines with friction polish?

I thought to start off with, we would do something simple like cut, and glue up a Herringbone 360 blank from scratch and turn it into a closed end, modified center band and top cap upgrade fountain pen with a perfect super glue finish.

I figure if they can do that, I might be able to get them to do something more challenging like turning a slimline with a friction polish. I wouldnt want to rush their development.....LOL....

Thanks for all of the kind words. When my classes are finished, I will take some pictures and post them.

Thats great news Robert, enjoy yourself!

The facilitites at John C Campbell are top notch, and the atmosphere there is like no other! We always have a great time when we go up to teach classes there. Last year I was lucky enough to join my wood working mentor as a teacher's helper on 5 different trips to Campbell doing everything from table making to beginning turning. These two classes will be the first that I am the instructor! It is always a great time up there!

I would like to know when the class is so I can sit in the front and heckle you like you did Ben..... LOL. Good going, I know they will learn a lot. Russell

If I dont have hecklers, we either are not having enough fun, or I have some sticks to pull out of peoples....Well you know.....

Hecklers let you know you are not putting them to sleep....LOL....

I will tape a picture of you up in the front row, and explain to my students why you are there!

Robert,
That's great... J C Campbell school is about hour and half from me.. keep us advized of the class dates... I can't afford the classes, but might drive over and say hello.

I have been told that the dates are going to be January 7th-9th, and March 18th-20th. I would love for you to come on down, and bring your completed stuff, and I will introduce you to the class and let you show off your stuff!
