TBC keeping the centres clean

I find that I get some CA on the dead/live centres when turning between centres and applying a CA finish. Are there good preventative measures that you can take to avoid this? Was thinking a light smear of wax, I guess BLO might also be ok?

I just let it smear and when I'm done soak in acetone or fingernail polish that contains acetone and the ca will peel right off

Well the dead centre is easy just move the tool rest up to it and use a sharp soft metal edge against it. I can lock my live centre so I do the same with it and pop it in the head stock. You can also put a small dowel between the two. It doesn't take much.

Switch to Delrin finish bushings, problem solved!

Just smear some wax on the DC & LC.

Thanks guys, no matter how careful I am I manage to get CA on the centres particularly the live centre so I'll get some soft metal like aluminium and scrape it off.

I use a slimline bushing between the live and dead centers, then just a light touch with my skew and it pretty much pops/peels off

I have found that if you place a 7mm tube between the centers and snug it up both centers will spin nicely. I have an old screwdriver that I ground to a chisel edge and I use it and the tool rest to scrape off the CA. Occasionally I will use some 400 sandpaper to polish the centers up a bit.

Good ideas Toddla and WB, used it tonight and a short bit of 7 mm tube worked well.

Slimline tube for me like mentioned above. Spin both centers and clean em' up with your tool of choice.

Delrin bushings are a big help.
