I know I am getting older by the minute but it boggles my mind this trend and fascination with whole body art tatoos. Can someone please explain the value in this? Do people realize what they will look like when they get old and the skin wrinkles? Every movie and every tv show these days there are multiple people with huge tats all over their bodies and the ones that do the face now are really disgusting. Doesn't these things have a negative effect on employment hires today or is the world just all accepted this practice. Finally is this an expensive adventure each and every time it is done. ?? Where do people get the money for this stuff? Women are really into this and just is not a good look in my eyes. I am so out of touch today.

I've wondered the same...

In all honesty, I am not sure they understand what happens to tatoos as skin ages. I suspect if they walked into a Sturgis biker bar and took a look around, they might get a clearer picture of what the future holds for their skin! ;)

I find it a bit sad. Very rarely, you can see that someone paid for what ended up being quite a work of art...but most of the time, you really wonder what people were thinking...

Not to mention all these piercings people get on their faces and those big loop holes in the ears!! And what's up with guys wearing earrings in both ears? Use to be a biker thing to have a piercing in the left ear. Lol

Before I say anything I need today I don't have any tattoos. Although I'll admit I don't see the reason for them I think it's up to the person if they want them or not. Now I've seen some funny ones and pretty ones as well. So to those that choose to get them please remember that if you put them where people like me can see them I want to see what they are. Plus now that I'm older and can see as well I have to squint and stare longer to get the image in focus. SO DON'T go judging me thinking that I'm judging you. I'm just observing your art.

I have no tattoos. Thought about it when I was younger but wasn't sure what line of work I would go into and wasn't sure by body should be easy to identify.

I have recommended to friends and family members to cover their tattoos when they go for interviews so they don't influence the outcome if they are truly interested in getting the job.

When I interview people to work for me, tattoos on the face or neck are points against you.

My youngest daughter has some beautiful tattoo work. When she was considering becoming a teacher she kept them discrete. Once she settled on becoming a pastry chef, she has been more adventurous.

I have none, not a big fan. Some I consider poor taste but many are fascinating. I have a great nephew with some stunning prison tattoos, which are all black line art only.

Kinda wondering why the expectation is to love them or hate them. Oh, wait. That's what it is all about these days.

Well first like to thank those that took some time to give some replys and I see there is a for and against line just as most things are. I agree on the erring things too hanging from every possible opening and the earrings on men just grew up with the stereo type as that being a gay thing. Our culture sure has changed. Even watching baseball, all these rich dudes with gigantic necklaces and earrings being worn while playing baseball. Is that really needed. We all know you are rich. The tats on women gives me the slutty vibe. But as I said the culture has changed and people want to be noticed more and more so if not on social media it is in person. Many of these tats you could not decifer what it is unless you look real hard. Going the full length of an arm or leg is abit much I would think. But as I said I am old and grew up in a different time zone. Wonder what the next trend or fad will be. ?? Love it or hate it they are here to stay I guess. Thanks again

My tattoos are about 40 years old, and I have a dozen. People with tattoos rarely care about what people with out them think on the subject.
This is true. Been a biker most my life. I have tattoos on my arms, back, front, legs and on one hand. Never put any on my face. I did the majority of my tattoos myself. Did a lot on others back in the day. I think the last tattoo I got was back in 94'?. Don't care what people think of them. Some are just BS but the majority of them have a meaning to me. I use to cover them up back in the day because a lot of people use them to make their first impressions about someone. I don't worry about them anymore. Heck, I'm 63, who cares. Lol

Treat your body like a temple.

I, for one, have NEVER seen a temple that wasn't adorned with beautiful art.
Not to pass any accusations, but do you truly live by this? It's something to consider. I'm 29, I served in the Army for 8 years and many of my brothers are covered in tattoos. Some are stupid, but that's sometimes intended because they have a good sense of humor. Some are representations of their actions and achievements in life. The things they're proud of. They are not too ignorant or stupid to realize their skin will wrinkle. I have a tattoo I've been drawing for years and given careful consideration to, because I know it will last forever. This one will be my first but for years I've tailored the design and imagery and everything it represents to me and it will span from my wrist to over my shoulder. In my state it doesn't effect employment (it legally can't) unless it's obscene. My criticism is that you state to treat your body like a temple. Do you eat fast food? Are you healthy? Can you run a mile with ir without body armor, and have you kept your bmi and blood pressure at healthy levels? Do you consume seed oils? Do you exercise daily? We do. We can.
Many if not most of my peers in the military whether they are still in or not exercise and or lift every day. I practice Jiu Jitsu with some of them twice a week. I read, study, learn as much as I can and live the most morally straight life possible. If the man with tattoos on his arms lives this lifestyle, feeding himself and his children with healthy food and keeping his body in permanent fighting shape, but has things on his arms that express his interests in an exercise of his own personal freedom, are you treating your body as more of a temple than he is? It is easy to pass judgment, I urge people to use restraint when doing so.
Just my $.02

The point of what I said isn't to admonish or praise any specific lifestyle. It's to illustrate that each person's body is theirs to adorn with whatever art they want (or don't want) to.

I don't have any tattoos yet at 31, but I do my best not to judge others for having them. Outright hate symbols aside, their artwork is for them to enjoy, and not for me to judge them by.

It could also just be a fad.

I have no idea upon re reading your comment how I was able to misread it as badly as I did, I apologize, your point was obvious, somehow I didn't even see the second sentence. I actually went back through all the comments thinking I must have accidentally tagged you and meant to tag someone else. 😂

Even if it is, the choice is still their own

I think definitionally it can't be considered that. Not insofar as to say anything is a fad because it doesn't continue forever. When you have people who are 80 covered in tattoos and an increasing trend every year among people 18-20…I think we've moved past fad.
You might be right. It is just one of those things I do not get and that is why I brought it up. There maybe many cases out there that never get reported of infections because of the procedure and maybe worse. I know there are those that just want to stand out and draw attention to themselves above others with colored hair and jewelry hanging all over and many other outlandish exploits and as mentioned it is their right to do so. The world is changing. What lies around the next corner we can only guess. Happy Tattooing!!

For me in my lifetime...we are around the corner. Society in my eyes is a different world. I was born in 47. I loved the 50/60/70's.... mostly the 60's. I remember one guy we knew got a tat on his shoulder to conceal it. His mother saw it...went nuts and took a sponge...tried to remove it. I'm still laughing.
