Have any of you or your family bought thing at Target since Thanksgiving using a debit or credit card? If so watch your watch your accounts and maybe notify your Bank/Credit Union. My wife used hers, but so far no problems. This morning I transfered most of our Checking account balance into our savings account and will be calling our Credit Union this morning to see what they want to do. I imagine they will block/cancel her card and issue a temp card until a new one can be sent. It is a hassle but that is all we can do. Back in July our local large family owned Grocery Chain was hit and all of sudden I had $2500 in purchases from Sears and Walmart. My Credit union caught it and called and asked me about my purchases, cancelled both our cards and refund the money. The company denied there was a problem but then some of their employees got hit even employees at my Credit Union were hit. That time it was Debit Card information stored on their computer. Being a small Credit Union I think helped identify the problem and allowed them to act quickly. I have had one attempt a few years ago but I caught it and stopped it. Now I monitor our Checking/Debit account closely much to my wife's dismay and question purchases that seem strange especially if they are really small amounts like $2.56 on line as that can be a test purchase. This is kind of a pain in the butt as we are traveling Christmas morning to Boise Idaho for Christmas the our oldest Son and his family. Hope no one gets hit when you do it is one stressfull time. Maybe it will cause these companies to be more careful and up their security and stop the mining of our information. We have really limited which cards we use and where and change password on the Debit card monthly and only use one small balance CC online to limit our vulnerability.

Rather than prematurely cancelling/reissuing your cards, contact the big three credit reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax) and have them implement a Fraud Watch on your accounts. If there is any activity on your cards/accounts, they will immediately notify you. Unfortunately, this also means that every time YOU use the cards, you will get a notification, but better annoyed than sorry.

I had my ID stolen a few (over 5) years ago.
It took me over a year to get everything streighten out.
Just one of the reasons I don't use credit cards or paypal.

Wishing everyone 'good luck' and I hope they catch the bastards.

Target just posted something and my CU backed it up. What they grabbed did not include the pin number on debit cards. So if you use a debit card with your pin, you should be ok...

I don't use a debit card anymore... Only use credit card then go online to the cu and pay it off that night......w/a debit they can clean you out before you get home and good luck getting that money back before you need it.....

Colorado just lost a usb drive with the personal information of 19,000 employees on it.

There are so many opportunities for identity theft around that it's almost impossible to prevent all of them, but severely limiting who has your information and where you use credit cards and such can significantly reduce the odds you are the one that will end up the victim of it.

Maybe one of the credit monitoring services is a good idea, that makes it a lot easier and faster than trying to keep track of everything by yourself. Anyone have a recommendation for one?

After the attack and theft of our ID in July we now have Identity Guard as our monitoring service. It monitors the 3 Credit Reporting Agency's and other accounts and information. Evidently her Debit card/pin wasn't compromised. I will keep the bare minimum in the Checking account that the Debit cards are attached to for now. I can transfer funds from Saving to Checking as needed. I also have the Identity Guard app on my iPhone. Talked to my CU they have stopped the automatic transfer of funds to cover overdrafts on Checks or Debit cards that way over the weekend or Christmas it will add a little more protection as we will be traveling on Christmas Day and the following Saturday.

My wife had. Caught it on the news yesterday morning and she killed her card at the bank. I seldom use my bank card any more, just put my estimated expenditures on a Green Dot (no endorsement...just what we use) and roll with it.
