I have ordered some Taps and Dies and they come in nice little protective plastic containers. Others have come with nothing. I am looking to buy some of these containers for those that came with nothing.

Anyone know where I can find some?

What do the containers look like? Would casting powder jars work? I have tons of different size empty containers of pearlex and mica powders, I just keep tossing the containers in a box not knowing what to do with them other than it seems such a waste to trash them. Them mica jars in particular look expensive and heavy duty.

I'll take some pictures when I get home.

The Die holders are small box devices just bigger than the dies.
The tap holders are similar to the holders that I have gotten some router bits and even a pen mill shipped in.

Pics to follow tonight.

What about Plano small tackle storage boxes? They make them is all sorts of sizes and shapes. Available at most large retail stores and fairly cheap to buy.

Most of my taps and dies are in the large case they came with as I bought them as sets, but I have a bunch of loose ones too, I just toss them in the same drawer. The tackle box idea is a good one. I don't personally like tools like this to sit in a little container that I have to open and then put the item back in when done. I'm not that organized with these types of things though, I usually have to dig through boxes loaded with drill bits because I'm too lazy to put them back in the right hole, but my taps and dies do usually make it back into the case in the right spot because the case is open in the drawer so it's real easy to just toss it back in the empty hole.

Taps should, at very least, be prevented from banging into one another or other hard objects; doing so can easily chip the cutting edges. Dies are a bit less subject to this, but avoid just tossing either into a drawer or box. You can repurpose an old, stained pen tray to lay taps in, while dies can just lay flat or be stood on edge; just be consistent to protect those teeth.

Hit them all with a light coating of oil (not WD-40 or LPS; Starrett M1 is okay), especially if you're in a humid climate. Do this to each one after every use, and your tools will last a lot longer.

This is what i do. I have the proper tap to go with the die and the proper drill bit for the tap all together. Nice and easy. I also use a lot of cooking spray while cutting and there is always a coat left of them so no need to add an extra coat. Everything is already lubed up. Just add a fresh coat before cutting.

Well, I finally took a shot of the storage devices I am looking for. Anyone know where I can find any containers like these in the pic?

Thanks!

Fred

I was at Big Lots this weekend and they had some "project boxes" that were perfect for my Pen Kits. I usually make them up in groups of 10 or more so I open ALL the bags the kits come in at one time put them in the project boxes.

These are even dust sealed with a rubber gasket they had about 4 sizes and the small ones that I was looking at were only $3.50 each!!!

They even have hangers so I could put them on Pegboard if I had any.
