Hi all! Sorry- super novice question… I've seen tap and dies at turners warehouse or the bulk buys for $100+ each, but this multi-piece set on Amazon is only $40. What's the difference and why doesn't the Amazon one (or something like it) work? Thanks in advance for the insights!

I guess that the tap and die set at turners warehouse is multi-start thread type, which means the thread it makes will start at several points (usually three) simultaneously. Those taps and dies are much more expensive. They are also regularly made from HSS, unlike cheaper pieces which are made from carbon steel.

You can make pens successfully with single start point threads, but the twisting of the cap / barrel thread will take some time. If you intend to make pens for selling them, investing in multi start threading equipment is recommended. the section / barrel thread is less important and can be left single-starting, as it is not opened that many times.

Pen making can use finer thread making tap and dies than the normal sets have. Its not that you cant use the sets your looking at it just limits you on what you can make. Finer threads mean less dept cut into your pen blank material, That means you can have thinner walls and you pens wont be as bulky. I use a lot of .75mm pitch threads, 1mm pitch is also popular. Smaller finer threads are also not as rough on your material cutting the threads, your not removing as much material as a coarser thread and have less chance of breaking the blank your working with.

The triple lead tap and dies that are hundreds of dollars are made in USA to order, and cut 3 parallel threads at a time, like a 3 lane highway. Your cap will twist on/off faster with the 3 lead finer threads. A .08mm 3 lead pitch will travel 2.4mm down the material in one turn.
