I'm not sure where to post this, but this seemed a likely place.

I have a Delta Midi Lathe, and have just begun to Drill my blanks on the lathe, (thought it would be more time consuming venture, but it's not, and the results are great)

My question is: Are there different or upgrade Tail Stocks available? I have about a 1.5 inch travel (turn the wheel) on the tailstock? My problem is, on longer pens, I have to shift the tailstock towards the head stock about 3 times to drill the blanks. It's not difficult, but I feel it would be more efficient to leave the tail stock in place and just progress/recede the drill from one spot on the bed.

Thanks in advance.

The thing to do is to loosen the tailstock after drilling in a short distance and hand pushing the bit into the piece slowly holding onto the tailstock and the drill head. Be sure to clear the bit often. That is how everyone I know does it and how it was told to me.

Hi Scott; That's probably as many times as you should be moving the tailstock to ensure that you are clearing the drilled out wood from the drill bit.

You would certainly have to move the tailstock more times if you were drilling acrylics!

Thanks Guys, in the end, the final product is way better on the lathe, even with the repositioning, much cleaner bore.
And, yes, found out the other night, way more clearing with the acrylics this way, but again, much better on the end product.

Jet Mini Lathe Tailstock under Trades and Giveaways. In conjunction, but not necessarily the identical subject, is conversation about my tail stock malady. Knowing about it might give you another perspective.

I have the Jet 1014 and only move the tailstock once. I also don't clear the shavings, at least not on my casts. I drill at 1800 rpm and the shavings self eject in nice ribbons. Just my experience and yours may vary.
