I have been looking at the Proxxon 37070 saw and would like some input on it. I want to do some segmenting and want to know if the Proxxon 37070 saw will cut 7/8 X 7/8 African Blackwood or other equally hard exotic woods without problems. How is it for cutting such wood length ways as well as cross cuts. What blade should be used for these woods? My shop does not have room for a regular size saw and my pocket book disallows the Brynes saw. Any help or suggestions certainly appreciated.

I have their miter saw and like it for what it is and what I do with it (rough cut blanks). The Amazon reviews on the their table saw were not the best. The cutting depth is slightly over 3/4s (.8333 inches), but less than 7/8ths.

Here's the link:

I have never used the saw but the spec's make it look to me to like it doesn't have quite enough cutting depth for pen blanks unless you are going to stick with smaller pens. Many of the bigger pens need a blank of 7/8th or even 1 inch and this saw will require two passes to cut them. As to Ripping, most table saws are better for that than for cross cutting.

Thanks Tony, Ollie & Smitty for your replies, but would like to hear from some one who has actual experience with the Proxxon 37070 regarding pen making.

Hello Ben

I do not have that saw and that is what you want to know but you will be hardpressed to find many with it. If you are going for a small saw like that the Byrnes saw is a better saw but of course more money. To me it is a bit way too high priced for what you get. You can get a decent table top 10" saw such as the Dewalt or a Bosch or even the Makita gets good ratings. Can do so much more with it. It is at least $100 less too. Blades are easier to buy. You can make so many jigs to easily do many pen making features with. Very limited on a saw that small. Good luck in your search.

Well have a great one and I hope you enjoy many many more..

If you do go for one of the 10" table saws suggested, I would suggest that you get a fine tooth blade for it. I have one similar and whilst it is fine for ripping I found it too aggressive for cross cutting so am fitting a finer tooth blade myself. The Proxxon really is for model making btw, doll's house furniture and the like, hence the shallow cut and relatively low powered motor.

Something else that you might like to consider, if only on safety grounds, is checking on YouTube how to make a small table saw sled, which is my next task after changing the blade (it has lost some teeth, like me). Repeat cuts are both quick and easy, as most of the videos show, ideal for my third project, building a wooden fire engine (truck) for my grandson ...
