I have been casting blanks in a flat mold because I wasn't sure how well you can swirl the resin in a tube. How do you folks accomplish swirls in something like a pvc pipe?

I Pour one color about 1/3 of the way up, then pour the other color down the middle of the tube about 1/3 of the way up, then pour both colors so the streams cross (making sure that the streams are within the world on the OTHER side of the portal :D) down the middle of the tube at the same time 1/3 of the way up.

I rarely poor using tube molds anymore, but when I want a firey look, I fill teh tube halfway with one color then top it off with the other. I then stick a popsicle stick in and give it a twist as I pull it out.

That's all.

At what stage is it best to pour the colours?. Is it done as soon as hardner is added, or when resins have started to gel. Some of my mixes have went from gel stage to large lump of goo that will not pour in a very short time. I always add 5-6 drops per oz, depends if i have the shakes or not[:p]

I add 3-4 drops/oz. and pour right after mixing the hardner in.

Here are some examples of my results:

Thanks for the tips. I might just have to try these methods. I have been waiting for the mix to start to gell and have had a few failures when I wasn't paying attention and missed the deadline. I like to do 3 color casts and had one the other day that thwarted my creativity. Also sometimes when i wait for the gell stage I end up introducing bubbles into the goop. I found these relativly easy to repair with snading dust and super glue and sometimes a chunk af like material to fill the void. I had one the other day that had a bubble right to the tube -and my quality department ( my daughter) couldn't detect the repair.:D

What kind of tube do you folks like? I have several kinds of tubing laying about- copper pipe, pvc, aluminum. What works best in your estimation?

Scott; I think your swirls are great. I like the look of the green Sierra. The colour goes well with the black. What is the colour mix in that one, or is it just one colour. Thanks for the tips.

Nick,

I use a pressure pot for ALL of my pours. Since I have one I see no reason not to.

Dermot,
That is a combination of two greens: Mixol 8 Green (Purchased at Woodcraft) and Pearl Ex 685 Spring Green (available online or at Michaels craft stores).

Scott,
Two questions:

I have a pressure pot from Alumilite (christmas present from the LOML) and a porter cable pancake air compressor. I have purchased multiple gadgets but cannot figure out to get the air from the compressor into the pressure pot. Can you give me some hints?

I am using the Alumilite mixes and once I figure out what I am not doing correctly with the pressure pot - I am trying to figure out how I can get the mix into the pressure pot before it hardens. Alumilite says about 3 minutes before hardening - any thoughts?

Thanks,
Joe

Here is a link to pictures of my pot:

It is a very simple design.

Joe bought his pot from Alumilite. It should already be set up for pressure casting.

All he needs is to attach an air hose to the 1/4" NPT connector on the pot's regulator.

Greg, Scott, Steve,

Thanks for the info. Got a couple of days off - I'm going to get this thing working in between a baby cradle I'm working on.
