Experiment with alcohol dye on curly maple. Whole lot cheaper than buying the pressure pot ones.

Made this a few days ago. It's hempwood. I dyed it with food coloring that was in my kitchen supplies.

Here is an experiment for you, a piece of wood like on the first pen, curly maple. Dye it black before you start sanding, then sand through your normal process, then dye with the brown. The black will soak in deeper in the softer parts of the curly grain, when sanding off the black you will get different shades left by the black. When you dye with the brown, the remaining black will accent the grain. Or try different colors, red and blue work good with this dye process.
