I was making pens long before I knew there were pen kits you could buy. I used the ink cartridge from a Bic pen and drilled a hole in a piece of wood to accept the cartridge. The only hardware to buy was what some people call an aircraft drill bit. 5/32 did just fine for me, but you should measure for friction fit which ever cartridge you decide upon. Try to pick wood with as straight a grain as you can find. Only about 70% of my drillings became pens as the bit ran out the side of a good many. Turn the wood on the axis of the hole, not the axis of the wood so the hole stays in the center. The pen shown is made from cherry and is one of my favorites.
