Steampunk watch parts question...

I am looking for advice from anyone who is willing to offer it! :biggrin: I am considering trying a metalic-type nail polish to paint the tubes for a watch parts pen. Would this be a good base to glue on my gears? My brother has commissioned me to make one for him using a Rolex knock-off, and I'd rather NOT start out with a mistake! I do intend to do "dry run" first with other parts I have before getting to his. Thanks in advance, for any input! Don

Don I've used nail polish and it does work. The problem i have is getting it even and not looking so streaked. I have also used testors with good luck. I made a rolex recently and used one of my ironclad foil blanks and I personally think it turned out great.

I have been using metallic paint for watch part blanks with good success. I have ran into a few issues, the first was using StickFast CA. It didn't matter if it was on carbon fiber or paint I would get this 'crackle' around the parts. I also noticed that when I used Alumilite and metallic paint I had to make sure the tubes were VERY clean before pressing the parts together. It would expand the tube enough to break the bond between the Alumlite and the paint. I switched back to epoxy and don't have near the problem but I am making sure the tubes are clean also.

If you can do it carbon fiber is a great base. I know there are several people that use nail polish and PR with good results so either way you go it should be good. Just make sure to clean the tubes good.

Thank you, much appreciated. I love the look of the carbon fiber tubing, but have had a real hard time finding it locally. I don't own a credit card, so ordering state side has proven to to be an obstacle, as well. I found it out of Toronto here in Canada, but a "mini" roll is 500 feet! I found a similar material, but its nylon. Comes in many colors, and no minimum.That will be something I will definitely give a shot!
