I was looking on ebay and seen this. Might be the perfect thing for a first time lathe. I would guess that pens would be possible.

My first lathe was like that, OK for bowls, platters etc. but it would need a special chuck made, to be able to turn pens on. The spindle is solid, no taper, the tailstock is fixed with a bearing, I don't even think it's 60 degrees on the end.
