Square peg, round hole.

I've successfully mounted round shaft woodturning tools into timber handles a few times now but now I want to mount a half inch square section.

Do I drill a half inch hole, mount the steel section and then fill the gaps with D shaped bits of timber, or is there a better way?

Do I try to shape a square hole?

I'm using a really dense hardwood handle (ex surveyor's peg) and brass ferrule.

I new to working with wood so any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Frank,
Half inch square bar won't drop into a 1/2" hole, you'd need something like 9/16"-5/8" to go across the corners. Best way, would be to grind/machine the corners off, and use an epoxy glue to hold it in place.

I have used a 4" grinder to round off the square shafts. It only has to be grenade or horseshoe "close", not perfect.
