Square Cash

Who on here uses Square Cash other that Paladin. I was going to go with it after talking to him about it after I saw one of his posts with stuff for sale. After looking into it only to find out it's not available in Canada at this point. We are usually 2 years behind the US, heck we have not had the square reader that long.

I tried it for the first time today and don't like it so far. It left me wondering if it worked.

It may be my browser at work though.

When I got to the screen to put my debit card info in I was presented with 4 boxes in a strip. None of the boxes were labeled, so I didn't know what information went into each box. I think I got it right, but Square did not confirm it, the only thing I had to go on was that the last set of information I filled in didn't get rejected like the other tries. The vendor I am buying from did NOT get an indication that money is coming his way, the only thing he got was that Square was waiting for me to act.

I do like the idea though, I'd like the person who I'm buying from to get all of the money. Maybe I'll figure out what I did wrong and it will turn out to be a good tool to use for buying stuff.

Like I say, it may be the browser I use at work (IE9), but so far I do not like it enough to try again.

I think I figured out why I thought this was an issue...I am overthinking it. Unlike PayPal, where you go to paypal.com and log into your account to send money...with Square Cash you just send an email.

Go to your regular email account (you do not need to go to SQUARE), and send an email to someone (me, for example). Address it to my regular email address, like marcissmart@yahoo.com and in the CC: field, put cash@square.com. In the subject field, put in the amount of money you are sending, like $400.00, and in the body of the email you can put anything you want. Like... Marc, here is the $400 I owe you for making me such a beautiful pen.

Hit send and I think you will get a email from SQUARE asking you what debit card you want the funds to come from. Then on my end, I get an email that says you sent me money and what debit card do I want it credited to.

That easy.

Actually, even easier, because the second time you send or receive, it will automatically use the debit card you selected the last time.

Or, you can download the app for iPhone or Android and it is easier still after that.

When you receive money, you do not have to do anything. It goes directly to your debit card for credit (shows on your bank statement as a debit card return for credit). The first time it takes 2 days or so to show in your account, but after that it is really fast. Like next day.

There are no fees on either end.

I do not know about Canada, sorry. Other than it is cold there.

Sounds like there may be a business opportunity in Canada to me! I assume it's governmental/tax restrictions that are creating the barriers to entry. Dwolla seemed pretty legit, I signed up for it including using tax id# etc for our business so that may not be it.

My bank recently told me they were not accepting Square Cash transactions -- yet. They were looking into the security and fraud aspects first.

For deposit or payment? I wonder how this is... I thought it goes through the mc/visa network- V/MC are pretty tight on banks. They wouldn't usually have a choice to accept or not once it was ok'd by V/MC. Was this a branch person? I'm wondering if it's rumor-mill. I'd ask Square themselves about it.

Square - Update

I tried using Square Cash earlier today from work and couldn't get it to work for me.

So after I got home I tried it and it worked just fine. It took the input right away, gave me the message that it sent the amount I wanted, then sent me a confirming email. All is good.

I don't think it was anything on Square's side, I think it was from my side of things.

I heard a story recently in the local paper about a fellow that used the Square to accept payments for his business, auto repair, the customer never complained directly to him but apparently contacted The Square directly and they took money out of his business checking account without advising him. When he tried to contact The Square, they had no phone and E-mails to them went unanswered. He subsequently settled directly with the customer by The Square had failed to correct the account and took more money from his account. I do not use Square but instead went through my bank where I have my business account. I rent a card swiper thru them. The info from my bank was that the Square info is not encrypted. Therefore, if someone with knowledge obtained the phone the card numbers could be recovered. The swiper I have guarantees me the data is encrypted and therefore is not recoverable should the swiper be stolen or lost.
