Tried to do a search for Square cash but it yielded many many many results so I will ask.

I just saw in the classifieds someone requesting payment via square cash. I clicked the link to see what it was all about. Seems to be pretty straight forward with no added fees. Is that the case, is it that easy or does the recipient pay the fees and the sender pays nothing? If so, what are the fees?

Thanks for any input.

That was me that posted the ad, and yes it is just what it seems. For those of us that have grown to hate PayPal, it is the way to go. I have used it several times and it is EZ as pie. Cost free, too!

So how do they make their money then? There has to be something in there that they get out of this. Do they sell our email address and my spam level goes through the roof the first time I use it?

Paypal can send money to friends with no fee.

Similarly, I'm guessing that square is counting on you having a square account because you use it for other business that does generate revenue for them.

PayPal can do that, but you have to have a PayPal account. The incoming money goes there, then you have to get it out. With Square Cash, it goes direct from debit (credit) card to my debit (credit). No money held by Square.

The guy who invented Square, also invented Twitter. He admits that there is no money in Square Cash for them right now, they will figure it out later.

They do not sell your email address, blah, blah, blah and you do not have to have a Square account.

Kind of funny, I just checked my email and had one from Square about Square Cash...... I have an account already for my reader.

I'm a loyal paypal fan here. I've had no issues with it. Easy to get to my money using PP business card.

But if Square is totally free, will be worth looking into & reading more about it.

Yes, I too have been happy with the ease of PP but the fees can really add up. Any alternative to save a little must be explored.

I don't believe anything is "totally free" and to use square you have to buy (if you don't already have) either an ipad or iphone and that's an expense I don't want now or in the future. The "Square" services may not cost, but the other peripheral costs may not make it worth while... I'm happy with paypal and have no issues with them.

With Square Cash (the original subject), there are no additional costs. There is nothing to buy. And you don't need an ipad or iphone.

I doubt it will remain free but if they keep the fees less than PP I am game. Also, the need for a smart device is incorrect. You can use the link in the OP and do it from there. A smart device is just another option.

Actually Square works with any smart phone. I use it for fairs because the fees are less then swiping a credit card machine and then entering the info at home.

I think people are confusing Square's credit card reader with "Square Cash"... The company has been branching out. One of those avenues is going after the person to person market which is where PP started before branching out to POS CC processing. "Square Cash" just requires an email (or Android or IOS). The receiver is sent an email and they can deposit the $ in their bank. See https://square.com/cash

BTW they've also started trying to get into a more traditional POS environment with "Square Stand" https://squareup.com/stand but hasn't been going that well.
