Hi all, how do you know what type of spring to use for different pen kits? Can you just buy a box of spring on amazons website and see if they can be used? Hope this makes sense. Once I sweep my shop floor I probably have a box of spring. Thanks.

Not all pens require springs. Roller ball pens always have springs to assure constant pressure between the ball and the writing surface. But the physical dimensions of the spring may vary between models - while there may be a technical requirement for the 'springiness', the more obvious differences are in the diameter and length.

Some ball point pens have springs. I haven't done an exhaustive survey, but a quick check of some instructions suggests that pens that use 'Parker-style' refills, while pens that use 'Cross-style' refills do not.

Fountain pens never have springs.

I don't think you could substitute generic springs from the hardware store, but on-line suppliers sell replacement springs for pens.

When I sold at shows, I had a selection of springs for rollerballs. Some people liked a more "spongey" feel, so the spring had more flex.

Yes, you can buy them at hardware stores, one foot in length and cut to your desired size. In MOST cases, a quarter inch outside diameter would fit nicely.

Ballpoint springs for Parker style are all the same.
Bolt action springs are very long, you should use the same spring if you need to replace.
Several "unique" pen designs also use their own springs--I have not taken the time to evaluate what they do and whether they can be changed to achieve any different feel.

Hope this helps,
Ed
