Hi Everyone!
Ever since reading Patricia's article on spirit stains, I have been tempted to try them out. I finally broke down and had Bill Baumbeck order in a starter kit for me. I have been experimenting on some of the Freedom Pens I'm making. I had a bunch of nice curly maple blanks, so that is the wood I used.
The top pen is very pastel because I did my usual step of sealing with CA glue as the beginning of my sanding routine. Well, CA seals pretty well against stain as well! I applied the stain after all my sanding steps, and it just wouldn't soak in that well. This is two to three applications of three different colors. CA finish.
The bottom pen is without the CA seal coat. I sanded only to 600, then applied the stain. It works much better this way. I think I did two applications of each color, then sanded with Micro Mesh after it dried. CA finish again.
Comments are welcome!
