Speed Control went Dead!

I've got a problem with my Delta 46-460. Started noticing this week that my speed control wasn't working normal. Tried turning last night & noticed I have one speed only now.

Started looking for Delta parts last night. I noticed they have a speed controller listed. So I'm assuming that might be what I need. But they want $288.98 for the part. At that price, I think the Delta might get put out of service. If parts are going to cost me that much, I will think about buying a brand new lathe. Been turning since 1998 & using only used lathes. May be time to break down & buy my first new one.

Anyone have an issue like this with their Delta. I'm not an electronics person so I want to check all avenues out before I do anything.

If you are going to shop for a new lathe, you might consider calling the Dallas Woodcraft store to see if they still have any of the NOVA DVR XP lathes leftover from their Black Friday sale.

The Houston SW store still has 2 left & they are still giving the $800 discount and the $300 free tools offer from Teknatool is good until the end of the month. (They had 3 left until Sunday :smile:)

Have you considered repairing the speed control? The failed part might be obvious, and inexpensive to repair. I had to fix my old lathe several times, and my 2 year old turncrafter once already also. It was a bad switch that I got off ebay for less than $10.

Billy; Did you try E Bay ?? There are a lot of people out there that have parts for lathes, new and used. If it were me, I would opt for a new lathe since you already have the tooling. Usually when your VS goes bad, it is caused by the arcing as the sweep goes ever the turns of wires. This arcing causes the sweep to degrade to a point that it no longer makes contact with the wires, or if you can only run one speed, you may have arced enough in one spot to burn through the wire causing your speed change to stop at that point. Thanks for the information. At this point I'm really thinking about a new low end lathe. Looking at the Rikon 70-220VS at woodcraft. Price $649 but on sell for $549 until Christmas Eve. I will put the Delta in the corner until I decide what I want to do with it.

Leaning towards a new lathe. Never bought a new one before so this sounds like a good excuse.

Edgar, would love to look at the Nova DVR XP. I use to have the Nova DVR 3000 which was basically close to the same machine but I made the foolish decision to sell it 2 years ago.

Right now the cash flow isn't good enough for me to llook that direction. Spent too much money on guns for my Cowboy Action Shooting this summer & just worked a trade on a bass boat last month. Got to quit spending money on hobbies... (-:

Oh boy, I know how it feels spend money on toys when something else appears that is a damn good bargain but sometimes, is good to stop for a little and consider what is really on offer.

This deal that Edgar is talking about, I can only wish that they would do something like that here in Australia, I have the Nova 1624-44, I paid AU$1,750 about 7 years ago, at the time the DVR XP was $AU4,000.

I always wanted to have the DVR XO as I heat to change speeds manually but, I never was able to afford it but more recently I have been considering to upgrade my machine and buy the upgrade DVR XP head/kit, the rest of my lathe is exactly the same as the original DVR however, the head alone is over AU$1,500 + freight and a new DVR xp cost here now AU$3,500 so, hearing Edgar mention that deal, I only wish that shipping wouldn't be so expensive as I would have him to purchase one for me and sent it down, at that price, one would be mad in not going for it, I doubt that, they will be do another one of these offer in a near future, if ever...!

There is such no other machine for small to small large turnings, I wouldn't recommend using a XP lathe to turn a 500kg chunk of wood, as I know I turned is different type lathes but, for anything up the maximum bed/spindle capacity, Nova DVR XP, is the way to go.

By-the-way, I'm not getting paid or no one have asked to promote this lathe...!

There is a good chance that the variable resister that the knob is attached to is the failing part. Those fail on the VFD systems too.

Could be a $10 repair.
 
Thanks to all for all of the information provided. It has been most helpful. At this point, I'm in no hurry to rush into anything. I've got a 1/2 day of teaching on Friday & then I'm off for 2 weeks of holiday time at the house. I will be looking more closing at my Delta before I make any decisions.
 
Billy, how old is your lathe? They have a 5yr warranty. My 46-460 speed controller failed about a year or so ago, and I got a free replacement from Delta, even though my lathe (which I bought used) was a couple of months out of warranty.
