Speckled patina

This is a finish I was on a piece of (I think) maple. It's BLO finished, but has anyone got any idea how to achieve this patina?

My process would be apply black trans tint dye, let it dry, then sand it off the top layer leaving it in the deep pours. Then apply the second lighter color.

Thanks for the response. What's "trans tint"? I get that it rests in the pores ... I just can't think of anything beyond boot polish, and that's too liquid. Thanks again.

Got it. It's a brand I'd not heard of.
