Spanish wood id?

My son went hunting in Spain last year and dug this wood out of a Spanish ruin that was supposed to be originally built in 1300s - attacked and destroyed in 1500s - any way to id this wood? Any help would be appreciated!

Looks like Oak to me. I've had shipwreck wood that looks a lot like that. Great tight grain. Cool find!

Cold you sand the end of that piece and a bit of the side smooth (ideally to 400 grit) and give us pictures ? Would help ID a lot .

So basically Keith, you have a seven hundred or more years old piece of wood, that needs to be stabilized. And that could have a very interesting story behind it, I hope you do some research on it to get as much info about it as possible.

I disagree with the Oak guesses because I don't see any medullary rays so maybe Chestnut. Whatever is growing in the region now would be a good place to start.

Did your son have permission to remove the wood from a historic site?

Definitely oak , over a hundred years of growth in that piece . Extremely long rays . N American white oaks have long rays , but I`ve never seen any that long . Probably felled within 5 or 10 miles of where your son found it . A Spanish forestry website might get you closer to the actual species .

Got up to about 80 and still had a couple inches on the right side to go . Didn`t have screen magnification set high enough .

I concede to Oak. What I thought were growth rings are the rays. Should make for some interesting pens.
