Two years ago I actually was on the Island (Grand Cayman), when the property had several large Palm trees cut down due to electrical line ordinances. I asked the construction manager if I could get a few 1' segments of the trunk. He looked at me like I was crazy and said "there is no purpose in saving any segments, these trees are rubbish." I told him I could dry and use the outer 2" of the segment as that would be the solid portion, not the pith (yes, I know that coconut trees are Monocots and have a thin layer of usable fiber, like straws). He simply laughed and had me escorted of the construction site as I watched the tree being cut down and placed in a dumpster.
My friends have Mango, Orange, Lime, Coconut, Poinciana, and a few Mahogany trees on their property. They have a few similar pens from 2 years ago, so I thought I'd make a few more.
