Getting a few gifts ready for 2021 when hopefully travel restrictions are lifted and I may get a few SCUBA dives in. These will go to friends who live in the Caribbean and have these trees on their property. Spalted Royal Poinciana and Black Palm end caps. The Spalted Royal Poinciana came from a sale from Wood128; lovely blanks. The Black Palm can be a bit fussy as this kit has small shoulders on the ends but all went fine.

Those have a very classy look. I am curious about the thin black line between the white spacer and the Royal Poinciana. Is that a thin material or a glue line. Either way I like it. I have considered using black glue on for similar type blank.

Hi Dale. It is a glue line. I use 2 part epoxy and it typically is not an unattractive added element. It's quite possible if I coat the ends in thin CA it may eliminate the leaching. I have done many of this design/kit and it has never bothered me. I have also at times used a small drop in the epoxy when gluing in a tube and translucent blank; never had any issues with adhesion failure. It those cases I usually do overkill and paint both the tube, hole and epoxy. 🤣

Very nicely done. Did the wood actually come from your friends property? Colors go extremely well with each other.

No. 😔 . I did try.

Two years ago I actually was on the Island (Grand Cayman), when the property had several large Palm trees cut down due to electrical line ordinances. I asked the construction manager if I could get a few 1' segments of the trunk. He looked at me like I was crazy and said "there is no purpose in saving any segments, these trees are rubbish." I told him I could dry and use the outer 2" of the segment as that would be the solid portion, not the pith (yes, I know that coconut trees are Monocots and have a thin layer of usable fiber, like straws). He simply laughed and had me escorted of the construction site as I watched the tree being cut down and placed in a dumpster. 😫

My friends have Mango, Orange, Lime, Coconut, Poinciana, and a few Mahogany trees on their property. They have a few similar pens from 2 years ago, so I thought I'd make a few more.

Mark, I like everything about your pens. The timber is great, different colours match so well and all results in an extremely classy pen.
Bravo.
