I have a customer requesting a pen from Southeast Asian wood. He wants it to be native to that area. What do you all suggest. Customer thought bamboo but I don't really think that is the most exciting choice. All suggestions welcome.

Amboyna burl, or tiger Stripped Narra.....
I know nothing about it but I have some wood labeled Asian Elm burl. I have not been able to find any info on it but it is very interesting wood.http://www.penturners.org/photos/index.php?n=17596

Nope, then try this site. They even list the names of the Asian woods that they carry. In stock ... I have no idea!

South east Asia wood
The two woods that I have used in this case are Burmese Black wood, and Black Palm. They both turn a beautiful pen They are both from Laos or Viet Nam. Will those do??

While I agree that one of the best looking woods in the world is Amboyna burl, if you are looking for something from the Indian sub-continent look into spalted Tamarind. The info I have is that it originated in Africa but it has been grown through out Asia for centuries.

Not really SE Asia,but try East Indian Rosewood and Macassar Ebony.
Customer only said SE Asia until I asked for specifics. I do have a few E. I. Rosewood blanks, so might go that route. I think i read that the National tree was Mango. I think I have a Mango blank around somewhere but that may be a needle in a haystack thing.
Okay, customer has decided on mango as it is the National tree. Who out there has any nice mango blanks that they would trade /sell to me?

BTW, both are rather waxy. I don't know that I would do a Ca finish on these.
