Sometimes I make things that are a little more "scenic"

I realize this is super far from a pen or flat work but I do all kinds and styles of woodworking. I thought I'd show off a recent project that we just got done.

The studio where my daughter tap dances has asked me to build several things for them over the years. This spring I made some stage flats for a ballet performance of Rapunzel. Each of the flats is 8 feet high, the center is 4' wide and the wings are 3' wide. Each flat has a 2 foot extension that can be attached to the top if it's needed for future performances. The flats are 1x4 frames held together with lap joints and we stretched muslin over the frames and primed them to tighten up the muslin and then it allows the flats to be painted as many times/motifs as needed in the future. I use hinges with removable pins to hold everything together. Before you ask, yes a ping pong table makes for an awesome assembly table.

The studio owner does the final scenic painting to match whatever her vision for things is.

Making these is a lot of work but fun to do every so often. The performance was this past weekend and went well.

Thanks for taking a look.

background in scenic construction is what led to me to woodworking. Great job on those flats!
Thanks so much Kate! I did some of it during high school and college at either the volunteer or beer money level. I enjoy it. The challenge of making things that can knock down and be very light so 7-14 year old kids (mostly) can move things around easily is always fun too.

sometimes the constraints push our creativity in the best ways. I wish more folks got involved in theater.
